AB OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a newly developed fully automated screening assay
for anti-HIV antibody measurement employing chemiluminescence technique,
which enabled us to obtain results within 13 minutes and to handle 150
samples per hour. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 61 patients
with HIV infection and 244 HIV negative disease controls and 100 healthy
controls. Serum samples from all subjects as well as anti-coagulated
whole blood from available subjects were analyzed. Anti-HIV antibody was
measured using fully automated analyzer (JIA-FS 150, Japan Electric)
based on chemiluminescence assay developed by us. RESULTS: None of the
HIV-negative sera and whole blood from the healthy controls, diseased
controls were found to be positive for HIV antibody. 61 sera and
available whole blood of the HIV positive patients were judged positive
for HIV-antibody. Thus the specificity and sensitivity of this test were
revealed to be satisfactory. Furthermore, we have confirmed that samples
extracted from filter paper absorbed dried whole blood were also
applicable to this system. CONCLUSION: This test may be useful for mass
screening for HIV antibody at blood banks, commercial laboratories,
emergency departments, and intensive care units as well as for screening
test at anonymous testing sites, and for mail-order test from remote
areas and developing countries.
